Tools for climate-proof urban planning

Despite climate change mitigation efforts, global warming will continue. Therefore, it is vital that cities adapt to the changes it will inevitably bring. Due to climate change, extreme weather conditions may become more frequent, and the climate less predictable. In the long run also average changes in the climate, such as rising temperature and sea level, affect cities and require adaptation measures.

Climate change adaptation actions are mainly local, and most of the adaptation measures fall into the jurisdiction of cities. Climate proofing of the cities already in the planning phase reduces costs of climate change impacts in future.

Climate-Proof City – Tools for Planning (ILKKA) –project promotes climate-proof urban planning. The goal of the project is to create planning tools and instructions about climate-proof planning for urban planners. Learn more about the project.
